I have never considered myself a writer. A Storyteller? Yes, but never a writer. I always wrote what I had to to get through the class or the project, but nothing more. Not to say that I am bad at writing, because I have often been praised for how I can turn a phrase or articulate a point. It was just never really something I strived towards or genuinely enjoyed. I always find myself struggling or finding the work tedious. My brain moves a million miles a minute and sometimes the words just genuinely can’t pour out fast enough. Other times the thought of starting a new paragraph makes me feel sick to my stomach. Getting genuine thoughts down is always hard, but revising those thoughts is a whole other beast with its own world of struggles. I despise reading my own work. I find it boring and honestly very uncomfortable. I always either find myself being too cynical or not nearly thorough enough in my review of what I have written. Sometimes I can’t even fathom the revising stage and let my writing live as is, which is never a moment I am proud of. I believe that learning to revise and to do so effectively will be my first step to producing better writing. All of this goes out the window when I write about something I am passionate about or if it is opinion based writing. I love defending positions which I feel strongly about. This is my most confident type of writing and the writing which I usually find myself excelling at the most, especially in cases when I am given opposition. I find that I achieve the most success when defending my own opinions in writing about things which I am passionate about. I hope to improve my ability to write without bias over the next year.
